Why use the Metric System?

The metric system is the international standard (SI) for measuring height (meters or centimeters) and mass (kilograms). It is utilized by healthcare professionals, researchers, and organizations worldwide (including the World Health Organization) to maintain consistency in clinical evaluations.

In standard clinical settings, BMI is strictly evaluated using the metric formula. If you are tracking your fitness progress globally or consulting a doctor, calculating your BMI directly in kg and cm provides immediate, standard results without unit conversion rounding discrepancies.

The Metric Formula

Standard Formula:BMI = Weight (kg) / Height² (m²)

Example: For a height of 180 cm (1.80 meters) and a weight of 75 kg:

  1. Convert height to meters: 180 / 100 = 1.8 m
  2. Square the height: 1.8 × 1.8 = 3.24 m²
  3. Divide weight by height squared: 75 / 3.24 = 23.15
  4. Calculated BMI = 23.2 kg/m²
